Snug(gie) as a bug in a Chicago pub crawl

I’ve heard once it gets cold in Chicago, it says cold for a long time. I guess that’s why people up there looking to raise money for charity with pub crawls need to take their Snuggies with them, or at least, that’s how the charitable organization Fate Monkey likes to have fun.

After a successful inaugural Snuggie pub crawl in 2009, 2010 looks to be bigger and better. For eight hours on April 10th, you can join the throng of be-Snuggied Chicagoans as they move from bar to bar across the Windy City.  Bars involved in the crawl include The Apartment, Lions Head Pub, Barleycorn’s, Kendall’s, Kelsey’s, Halligan’s, O’Malley’s and Sterch’s.

This year’s crawl is going to be sponsored by both Bacardi and Budweiser. Apart from $2 Budweiser brews, $3 well drinks and $5 Bacardi drinks at all the bars, there’s also going to be $2 ’shots-for-tots’. These are Bacardi shots where the entire price will go to the pub crawl’s chosen charity, the Karma Connection AC Orphanage in Tanzania. This is also where the all the proceed from your tickets will be going, but if you feel like you’d like to do more for the orphanage, Fate Monkey has also sent up a donation page just for them! They’re also participating in the Chicago P.D.’s annual food drive for the homeless, so bring any spare canned food you’ve got lying around (you’re never going to eat that can of lima beans you bought by mistake three months ago anyway) to The Apartment when you check in!

There’s also going to be live music at The Apartment and a raffle with tickets to Lollapalooza, the Blackhawks and the Cubs all up for grabs! This pub crawl promises to be great fun for a good cause – whatever the weather. Make sure to get your tickets today, as space is it limited. Check out a few photos from last year’s event below!

The greatest game never played… until now.

1989: A year often remembered for the fall of the Berlin Wall and Madonna’s “Like A Prayer” – but if you were from the New Jersey suburbs of Morristown or Montvale, there might be one fateful night that stands out above any other that year. The New Jersey State Ice Hockey Finals were set to take place between #1 ranked Saint Joseph Regional High School and #2 Delbarton in late March, after a hard-fought season. This much-anticipated game ended up never happening, due to a snap decision by the State Athletic Association after a Delbarton player came down with measles. Instead of just letting him sit out, the two teams were declared “Co-Champions” and the game never took place.

The two talented teams, which each included a future NHL draftee in their ranks, were distraught to say the least. They thought they would have to live forever, always wondering what might have been. After 21 years, the two teams will get their chance to settle the score, and raise some money for charity in the process.

After most have spent decades away from the sport, the alumni of the ‘89 teams are going to meet this April 3rd, at the Mennen Arena in Morristown under the auspices of raising money for the NHL’s “Hockey Fights Cancer” charity initiative. The game’s official website, dubbed the “Frozen Flashback,” had this to say on its website: “This game won’t be as much to settle old scores as it will be to get the teams together for a weekend event that will be remembered for a lifetime.” You’ve got to believe thought that there are going to be a few hip-checks for old time’s sake.

Not many people get a second chance at glory. To be a part of the crowd that’s been waiting 21 years for a result either way, make sure to get your tickets today.

Fans petition, raise funds to honor Phillies legend Harry Kalas

That ball is outta here!

Philadelphia Phillies games will never quite be the same with the loss of  Harry Kalas.  He was a true Philadelphia legend and the one constant comfort for Phillies fans over the years.

The day after Harry Kalas died, a Philadelphia Phillies fan started a petition on Facebook seeking support for a statue to be erected in Kalas’ honor and memory. After nearly 20,000 signatures, Lawrence Nowlan (one of the many supporters), created Dear Harry, Inc. to create a realistic timeline to make the Harry statue dream a reality. They’re working to raise $80,000 to build the memorial Harry deserves and will present it as a gift to the Phillies once it’s complete.

Dear Harry, Inc. has partnered with McFadden’s at the Citizen’s Bank Ballpark to host a fundraising event this April.  Tickets are $10 in advance – party at McFadden’s, watch the Phils game and help raise money for the statue!

Jenni Wowws Philly at Tavern on Broad

Last night Jersey Shore’s favorite spitfire partied at Tavern on Broad. Jenni ‘J-Woww’ Farley has been touring the country with her castmates, partying with the fans that helped make them famous.

The New York native arrived with a few friends and enjoyed food and drinks in her VIP booth. She was gracious and posed for pictures with fans as well. The intimate party allowed fans to chat with J-Woww and interact with the TV star more than the other packed parties taking place around the country.

The 48th time’s the charm for the Ann Arbor Film Fest

The 48th Annual Ann Arbor Film Festival is happening later this month at the Michigan Theater. There’s going to be nearly 200 movies, with filmmakers from the States, Japan, Southeast Asia, Suriname, England, Ukraine, and Canada showcasing their work, between March 23rd-28th.

This year’s festival awards committee is comprised of three respected members of the film industry: Irina Leimbacher, Tomonari Nishikawa and Ben Russell. They’ll be reivewing all the films over the course of the whole festival, and will dole out over $16,000 in cash awards to filmmakers. Each judge will also have a free public program of their own work during the festival.

The the festival is going to be split up into two programs: free programs and special programs. The highlights of the special programs include Naomi Uman’s short films collectively entitled “Ukranian Time Machine,” Daniel Barrow’s Every Time I See Your Picture I Cry, and the new short films by British filmmaker Nicky Hamlyn. Other interesting events include a film and discussion about experimental film, cleverly entitled “What the Hell Was That?”, Matt McCormick’s first feature-length film Some Days Are Better Than Others and a performance by experimental hip-hop artist Flying Lotus of a live musical score for Harry Smith’s 1957 classic of avant-garde animation, Heaven & Earth Magic. It’s going to be awesome.

Watch great movies in the Cornhusker State at the Omaha Film Fest

There’s not much to do in Nebraska in the dead of winter, but there’s probably not many better ways to spend the cold nights than attending a film festival.

The Omaha Film Festival is running from March 6th-14th, with movies starting on the 8th. The first two days of the festival are going to be filled with panels and speeches about how filmmakers move from scripts to the silver screen, and what it’s like on the set of a major motion picture. The panel includes director Donald Petrie (of Mystic Pizza and Grumpy Old Men fame), actor Chris Klien (of American Pie) and Randall Emmett (producer of Righteous Kill and the newest Rambo) all speaking about their experiences in Hollywood. There’s also going to be a screening of a movie filmed and set entirely in Nebraska: Lovely, Still.

After the conference is over, the fun really starts. Seventy films will be shown over the week, representing the work of nine different countries. Films to look out for include: Dear Lemon Lima, Evil Angel and My Name Is Jerry. For more information on all the films playing at the film festival, you can check out their comprehensive list here.

The people in charge also released this awesome HD trailer for the festival which I’ve included below. If that doesn’t convince you to get tickets or passes, I don’t know what will!

Chiddy Bang, Sam Adams, Hoodie Allen and J Smith – Live at the 27 Club

This show is going to be big.

Club 27 (pronounced “Two Seven”, by those in the know) is going to be hosting one of the hottest shows of the month on March 26th. Blog-darlings Chiddy Bang and Hoodie Allen will be performing along with Sam Adams (not the beer) and J. Smith – a local talent.

Chiddy Bang was recently mentioned on Kanye West’s blog as well as the massively popular Hype Machine, and they just released their well-received debut EP, Opposite of Adults. Hoodie Allen – now basically a celebrity on his UPenn campus – and J Smith are both going to be repping Philly. Sam Adams is also going to be releasing a new EP on iTunes soon, so this is going to be a release party like no other. There’s only going to be 800 tickets released, and judging by the amount of blogging and reviews all these artists are getting, you better get your tickets today.

What’s more, if you’re a West Chester University student, you can pick up special tickets that include bus transport to Club 27 and back, meaning you have no excuse not to catch this show. Tickets are only $20 (or $30 if you’re coming from West Chester), so take your camera, dig the music and get on the blog bandwagon!
